| Hot Rolled / Pickled

Products
of this type are produced by passing steel slabs, at extremely
high temperatures, through a hot-strip mill. The hot-strip
mill compresses the slabs, which are typically about 250mm
thick, between horizontal rolls with a progressively smaller
space between them (while vertical rolls govern the width).
This produces a coil of flat-rolled steel with a thickness
as low as 1.2 mm, and of considerable length. The resulting
coil produced during this process can be sold in this form
to customers or further processed.

Pickling
is a process in which the steel is chemically descaled by
means of immersion in acid. Removal of the scale gives an
improved surface finish compared to the standard `as-rolled`
product and is available for all grades of material. Types
available include Mill-Pickled and Oiled, Batch-Pickled with
or without Oil and also Pickled material with a specialist
dry film protection.
There
are two different types of hot rolled steels available, Structural
and Forming and each of these come in a number of different
grades. Structural hot rolled steels have high tensile strength
without a great weight penalty and this makes them ideal for
use in construction, commercial transport, offshore structures
and vessels, etc. Forming hot rolled steels tend to be highly
malleable and are used for purposes which require bending,
forming and drawing. Such uses include the construction of
tanks and boilers, automotive components, pipework, etc.
